The Best Man. No, it’s not about The Best Man movie released in 1999 and it’s not about The Best Man movie of 1964 either. But it’s about the best man – the traditions related to best man, the history of best man, the duties and responsibilities of the best man and yes, about best man speeches.

The night before the wedding day is very special for the groom and the bride. And it’s equally important for the others who are involved in the wedding in some way or the other. Take the example of the best man. He is probably busy than anybody else making sure that he performs the duties and responsibilities of the best man with perfection. His foremost duty is to help he groom in all kinds of expected and unexpected circumstances. Obviously the best man speech is one of the many duties he has to take care of but definitely not the only one. Here’s a list of things a best man should check -

• Call the florist and verify if he is ready with the order for the boutonnières and make sure they are available before time.
• Are the tuxedos in place? If not ensure that you don’t have to look for them just before you are going to wear them. If the tuxes were borrowed make sure you don’t have to worry about them.
• It’s important that the groom has sufficient clothing ready in his wardrobe and it’s the responsibility of the best man to make sue that every thing is in place. And don’t forget to check that the groom has the right pair of shoes because he would really hate to discover that his shoes are of wrong size just before he leaves for the church.
• If it’s your responsibilities to arrange for the video photographer, don’t forget to call him and remind him of tomorrow’s assignment.
• Double check the wedding rings. They should be in your custody and please make it available to the groom whenever he needs it.
• It’s absolutely vital that the limo or the taxi arrives right on time. Do they have the detail information about the location? You should call and confirm the status.
• Ask the groom if he has the honeymoon documents ready with him? The flight bookings, passports, Debit and Credit cards, (if he is travelling abroad) hotel accommodations and everything else – this is the last time you should both check if they are in order.
• You should also ask the groom if he is done with the honeymoon packing and offer to help if he is yet to get it done.
• These are the common duties you are expected to perform the day or night before the wedding. But often there are unforeseen incidences where the groom might seek your help or you may offer to volunteer even if there isn’t any formal request from the groom’s side.

By now you should realized why I keep telling you all (the best men), why it is important that you should get ready with your best man speeches at least a couple of week before the wedding. You will find it harder and harder to prepare for it as the wedding day gets closer and closer. However, on the night before the wedding day, when you are done with everything else just go through your best man speech at least for a couple of times so that you could have the feeling that you are ready with your best man speech and sleep the night through happily.

The history of the tradition of the best man goes back to as early as the sixteenth century when the sole duty of the best man was to help the groom kidnap a woman who he is going to marry.

In modern time, the foremost duty of the best man is to help the groom to get ready for the big day, present the wedding rings when they are needed and arrange for the bachelor party. But in the past, the best man was trusted with a very different sort of responsibility.

The Tradition of Kidnapping the Bride
This custom of kidnapping of the bride is believed to have originated from the Germanic Goths. Traditionally, it was usual for a man to marry a woman who lived in the same town or village where he lives. But sometimes there were not enough women in that town or village. In those cases the groom had to go to neighboring towns or localities to find a suitable bride for himself. Once he found the bride of his choice he would soon invade the locality and kidnap his desired woman and eventually marry her. The groom would ask one of his intimate friends who he thinks to be the best man to assist him to support him in getting the job done.

The best man then would also try to protect the couple (actually the groom) during the wedding and make sure that the bride’s family (who would obviously try to get her back) stays away from the place of wedding unless of course they are prepared to accept the groom. And that’s not all. It was the responsibility of the best man to thwart any other man from hijacking the bride.

The best man customarily used to stand to the right of the groom, by having his hand on the sword, throughout the wedding ceremony, prepared to protect the groom and the bride from any probable threat.
