Giving a Best Man Speech Just Got Easier

It is a huge honor to give a best man speech at a wedding. The groom is, presumably, someone you’ve been very close to for a long time. He is someone who shares your history and perhaps some of your fondest memories. You have to keep in mind that the speeches usually occur just before everyone eats dinner and they will be anxious to get going with the reception. So, there are three general guidelines for best man speeches; be concise, speak from the heart, and add a touch of humor.

First, it is important to be concise. We’ve all been to the wedding reception where a best man steps up to the microphone with 12 pieces of paper in his hands. Organize your speech so that you can eliminate certain anecdotes if things are going on too long. Some people choose to use note cards. If you do this, don’t write your speech out verbatim. Instead, just write down one or two words that will trigger a particular memory. You can then speak off the cuff about the topic. Reading directly from note cards is boring, and you’ll lose the audiences attention quickly. Keep your speech to about 4 – 5 minutes.

Secondly, speak from the heart. There are many web sites out there today that offer templates for giving a best man speech. If you want to do something truly memorable, find a touching story that is unique to you and the groom. Something that adequately expresses how much you respect his new bride and how she will be a good addition to the family.

Lastly, infuse the speech with a touch of humor. The whole thing doesn’t have to be hilarious, but if you start off with a funny story and add a couple jokes sprinkled in throughout the speech, people will be more likely to pay attention. Its a joyous occasion and giving a best man speech is a great way to pay tribute to your friend.
